Comedy Central pulls 'South Park' rerun
    Big News Network (UPI)
    Thursday 29th December, 2005

Comedy Central pulled a scheduled rerun of the season finale of South Park that incensed the Catholic League the first time around.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights angrily denounced the Dec. 7 Bloody Mary episode, saying Comedy Central parent Viacom owed an apology to Roman Catholics for South Park's portrayal of the Virgin Mary.

Viacom board member Joseph A. Califano Jr., a Catholic, released a statement calling the episode an appalling and disgusting portrayal of the Virgin Mary.

It is particularly troubling to me as a Roman Catholic that the segment has run on the eve and day of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day for Roman Catholics, Califano said.

Califano at the time promised to have Viacom chief Tom Freston watch the episode, E! said.

The episode was pulled from Wednesday's night schedule without comment.
